How to Revive Your Floppy Greens (and Why It’s Totally Normal)

How to Revive Your Floppy Greens (and Why It’s Totally Normal)

So, you’ve opened the fridge, dreaming of a crisp lettuce salad or a vibrant stir-fry, only to discover a sad, wilted bunch of silverbeet or a floppy celery stalk that looks like it’s given up. We’ve all been there. You might be thinking, “Wasn’t this super fresh when it arrived?!” And you’re right - at Misfit Garden, we work hard to deliver the freshest, locally grown, plastic-free produce straight to your door.
But here’s the deal: keeping your leafy greens happy at home takes a little know-how, especially when they’re not wrapped in layers of plastic. Yep, all our leafy greens are 100% plastic-free because we care about cutting down single-use plastic waste. We don’t want a beautiful bunch of silverbeet wrapped in a plastic prison that’ll outlive us all. But that does mean you, dear customer, are now the official guardian of your greens.
So why do veggies go floppy - and what can you do to save them?

Why Do Veggies Go Floppy Anyway?

First, floppy doesn’t mean rotten! When greens and crunchy veg like celery or carrots go limp, it’s usually because they’ve lost water - not because they’re bad. Think of your veggies like little water balloons - when freshly picked, they’re full and crisp. Over time, especially without plastic, they naturally lose moisture to the air.

Supermarket veg wrapped in plastic might stay firm longer, but the trade-off? Mountains of plastic waste that New Zealand doesn’t need. So at Misfit Garden, we choose a better way - but a little post-delivery TLC is up to you.

How to Bring Floppy Greens Back to Life

Here’s the magic trick: just water. No gadgets, no secret potions.

🥬 Leafy Greens (like silverbeet, lettuce, spinach, kale)

  • Submerge in a sink of cold water.
  • Leave for 30 minutes to rehydrate.
  • Shake well to get rid of excess water.
  • Pop them in a reusable bag or container in the fridge.

They’ll usually perk up like they just got back from a yoga retreat.

🥕 Carrots

  • Chop off leafy tops (they steal moisture!).
  • Submerge in a container of water in the fridge.
  • Change water every couple of days.

Bonus tip: Works for radishes too!

🌿 Celery

  • Cut a sliver off the base.
  • Stand upright in a jar of cold water in the fridge.
  • Pop a (reusable) bag loosely over the top to trap some moisture.

A few hours later - crunchy celery ready for hummus duty.

Why Does Misfit Garden Bother Going Plastic-Free?

Because our planet needs us to. Every day, Kiwis toss out mountains of plastic from fruit and veg packaging - and we think there’s a better way.

By choosing Misfit Garden’s plastic-free veggie box, you’re helping reduce waste and supporting local, New Zealand-grown produce. Sure, it takes a little extra love to store your veg properly, but the reward? A happier planet - and the satisfaction of bringing a wilted silverbeet back to life like a kitchen wizard.

So next time you meet a floppy lettuce or a bendy carrot - don’t chuck it, revive it!
